Roger Buttles is a New York based visual artist who works primarily with oil and chalk pastels and colored pencil on paper. He appreciates the immediacy of this process, which blurs the line between painting and drawing, line and form. Often he works ina narrowvertical format inspired by Asian scrolls, the spatial constraints of whichhave enabled him to utilize non-traditional placement of objects in space. This creates a non-naturalistic composition. Recently Roger has begun hand-dying individual pieces of fabric on which to mount the artworks for installation, lending a three-dimensional aspect to the work.

Roger earned an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art institute of Chicago in 2014 and a BA in Anthropology from Harvard University in 2001. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at Site Red (Chicago), a two person show at Lens Gallery (Boston), and a group show at The Condo Association (Chicago).
